Christian Missions Charitable Trust, Chennai, India

This wonderful work was begun by Dr Coleen Redit in 1964 who, having left New Zealand for India, opened a work amongst the poor in a rented garage in Chennai. It is based on the sponsorship model where individuals or families are sponsored. There is now a hostel for several hundred women and girls from very poor backgrounds who work in the handicrafts centre, an orphanage for 136 children, the Bethany School for slum children with 550 children currently, medical care, a crèche, a screen printing unit to provide work for men and teenage boys, a social work unit that pays school fees for sponsored families, visiting children in sponsored families and providing food rations etc, rallies in 32 suburbs for children disaster relief in the area, a children’s camping centre based on a farm, a vocational training unit for boys, especially those who have not been able to have an education, counselling and rehabilitation, rural development projects outreach enabling poor women to earn money through basic crafts and also a leprosy rehabilitation centre.

This work covers an amazingly wide range of need and has had a hugely important impact on the communities, especially the most poor, providing hope and a future for many children. If you want to read more please see:www.christianmissionsindia.com
