ARCHIVE YEARS

Lawrence Weston Christian Fellowship, Bristol

Every work has its high and low times. A high point for me this year was when I took a senior school Easter Assembly containing 1,000 pupils, assisted by two Christian workers, Lorna and Jenny. We took the theme “What would you do for some chocolate” and then gave the pupils a series of challenges, for example, they had to sing a nursery rhyme, to be rewarded with a chocolate Easter Egg. We concluded by asking them “What would God do to show his love to you”, the answer of course is that He sent His one and only Son (John Ch 3 v 16). In the silence that followed our talk and as we quietly walked to our seats, the whole school clapped. In a school that has failed its OFSTED Inspection, it was a very moving moment.

A low time was when I was called into the Children’s Hospital and prayed with a 17 year old girl as shewatched her premature baby die. Worse was to come when I prayed with her 18year old sister who had the same experience the following week.

The photo is of the Christian Union held each week at the senior school. We continue to serve Hot Chocolate drinks (you can see one lad paying more attention to his drink than to the photo) and the school continue to call us the “Hot Chocolate Club”.

About 20 pupils arrive each week, but that can be much higher when it’s cold and wet, maybe the Hot Chocolate has something to do with that!

We have had a Bethesda Church re-union in which saw former and present Church members gather from around England. There is an additional link with Müllers besides the Church Partnership. After George Müller’s Church, also called Bethesda, was bombed during the Second World War, the Trustees of our Church decided to build a new place of worship, and so itwas that our Church was also called Bethesda after the original building in Great George Street.
